In the past, the annual big event at Woodbine Racetrack was called the “Queen’s Plate” for many years. But with the late Queen’s Elizabeth passing, the event re-named to “King’s Plate” this year in 2023 to reflect King Charles as the new King for the British Royal Family. Thus, our MoVernie on the MOVE Team was prepared and ready to cover the 1st ever King’s Plate.

This year’s King’s Plate was held on Sunday, August 20, 2023. It was a beautiful sunny day.

There were a number of horse races throughout the entire day. And of course, the Main Event with the big purse of the day was won by Paramount Prince, whose trainer was Mark E. Casse and the jockey was the one & only Patrick Husbands. Patrick Husbands is just so good at his craft, winning many races over the years.

Congrats to the owner of Paramount Prince!

King’s Plate is more than just horse racing or placing bets to determine who wins the races, it’s more than that, it’s a lifestyle, it’s a culture with so many things to do on this special day! People dress up for the occasion. The “hat game” is strong, people come here to pay to get into lounges, sip some nice cocktails, grab some food and hang out with their friends while watching the event.

There was live band music this year’s at King’s Plate, the Sam Roberts Band, it was quite enjoyable with the sound of the music as part of the entertainment. I always like how Woodbine Racetrack combines fashion, live music, entertainment with the horse racing.

And trust me, I really enjoy the horses galloping especially when they make the last turn and on the home stretch, trying to be the first to cross the finish line.

There were so many things going on throughout the day and with the Woodbine Racetrack having so multi-levels of floors, I am sure there would be a spot that is just perfect for you. Some prefers to watch the race on the ground level, some prefers to watch on the Mezzanine. Some others prefer to watch inside the building with air conditioning. Meanwhile, we were lucky enough to watch races on the ground level as well as high above in the media area. Different perspectives, different experiences.

So, if you have never experienced a horse racing event or King’s Plate in particular, I highly recommend you to purchase tix and experience for yourself.

Next year’s King’s Plate will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2024, click here to check out the various tix options for this special event!
