Grains Fish Noodle 五谷漁粉 – Markham, Ontario, Canada

Grains Fish Noodle 五谷漁粉 is now open in Markham, Ontario, Canada. This was an interesting one as my dad was the one who told me about this restaurant. I am usually the one who finds new places to bring my parents to try. This time, my dad requested us to dine here.

Before I came here, I Googled and realized Grains Fish Noodle 五谷漁粉 first began its business in Vancouver, they had already opened 2 locations in Vancouver and just recently opened a 3rd location. Congrats!

And now, this 14th Avenue & Kennedy Road location is the 1st in Toronto location for Grains Fish Noodle 五谷漁粉.

So, what’s special about this place? They specialized in fish noodles where they use the giant grouper to boil to a nice creamy broth. Moreover, they serve grouper fish.

When we pulled up to this restaurant, it’s actually an old historic house that got converted as a restaurant. There are 2 floors with upstairs cater for larger group. The ground floor is separated into 2 sections with one side connected with the kitchen and the main cashier counter. We sat on the other section that is more quiet and peaceful.

The food menu is very much straight forward. It’s not very extensive but it does offer enough variety of food items. The fish noodle is the main draw here. N1 is its original fish noodles, creamy mild broth served with lettuce, tofu, sour choy, grouper fish. My parents ordered N1 to share (coz we saw the bowls were gigantic when we saw the servers placed the big bowls from other tables nearby).

I chose N2, which is the same as N1 but with spicy broth. I asked the friendly server how spicy, she said not that spicy. The food menu also offers beef noodles and spicy pork intestines for those who doesn’t like fish.

If you prefer pan fried chicken or pork or baked chicken or pork with rice, you can choose these items instead.

There is also a snack section ranging from crispy fish skins, deep fried pork knuckles, spicy beef with radish or spicy pork intestines. We chose deep fried crispy wings with garlic as I know my mom luv chicken wings.

After our order, food comes by quickly. The bowl of fish noodles are super big bowl, so I would think a bowl for my parents were sufficed.

The broth for the original broth and spicy broth were both equally great and tasty. Broth is the jewel of this dish as it’s pipping hot, creamy and super flavourful. Interestingly, despite the broth is being boiled with grouper fish, it doesn’t tasted fishy.

Lettuce was crunchy fresh, tofu was a welcoming addition. The noodles here is also another unique part, it’s a combination of 5 different types of noodles that were made with different grain (hence the restaurant is called Grains). Each grain has different colours, so when the chopsix picks up the nood, you could see the different strains. I know one grain is from corn, another from buckwheat and the 3 others from other types of grains). I think it’s quite interesting. However, I personally prefer the noods to be more al dente vs soggy. Nevertheless, it’s more of my own preference.

The crispy chicken wings with garlic is a nice and simple snack but I really enjoyed it. The wings were in good size, not super huge or super small. It’s lightly battered with golden oil and it’s good taste but not overpowering by garlic. I really enjoy it.

Overall, we enjoy our visit to Grains Fish Noodle, it is reasonably priced, big portion of food, friendly and attentive service and the vibe of dining from a modern historic building added an extra cool vibes to it.

Parking could be a challenge during peak hours and finding the place may deem a challenge if you never been, but once you figure it out, then it’s not that difficult to find this restaurant located at the back behind DQ Blizzard.

We will definitely come back! Next time I may want to try the spicy pork intestines noodles.
