Luv the decor here at Cheung Kee 祥記. It uses the old traditional table colour, wood texture and chairs with nice lighting fixtures. There are lots of tables are meant for big groups.
Cheung Kee 祥記 is a place that offers dinner combos, dinner dishes or comfort food such as congee, rice rolls, noodles and fried and clay pot rice, etc.
Tonight, we came here for dinner, so we ordered 3 dinner dishes.
1) Sweet & Sour Pork
– Crispy pork, good size, not too big, not too small, perfect ratio of fat and meat
– Sauce a hint on the sour side, if it’s a little bit more balanced, that would be great.
– Appreciate the fact that they use real pineapple and cut it in pieces vs serving pineapples from cans typically found at other Chinese restos.
2) Signature Stir Fry 3-type of Seafood
– A disappointing dish, portion is small, at $25.99 a dish, it’s already on the steeper side, they used smaller shrimps and not the bigger tiger prawns, not a lot of squid or scallops, not sure how they claim it’s their signature dish
– Veggies were served a bit cooler side, meanwhile, the seafood was hot, that indicates to me, the veggie were plated earlier and waiting for the seafood to be served. That’s a no-no, many other restos would stir fry everything and serving it with “wok hey”, there next to none of wok hey on this dish at Cheung Kee
3) Scallions Ginger Stir Fry Lobster
– Many other places will serve lobster at market price, most often I prefer not to order as stand alone plate coz market price could be pricey, but at $29.99 CDN + tax here at Cheung Kee, I thought it was reasonable
– As expected, the lobster is about 1lb, still pretty fresh and have enough meat, I would say $29.99 is not bad
Overall, the service was good. The servers were hardworking and if you ask for more napkins or iced water, they get the job done on the 1st attempt when you asked. I did wish they would automatically come and clean our plate as we have lobster shells. But when we asked, they came and gave us new plates, which is greatly appreciated.
I don’t think I will come back for dinner as there are many other Chinese restaurants around the area that serves bigger portion dishes, and more cheaper and tastier if not similar. There are no complimentary soup or complimentary dessert here, so the sticking point is…if I can find other places that is cheaper, bigger portion and as tasty, I don’t need to come here for dinner.
However, I would come back to try its lunch options, perhaps the congee, rice roll, noodles would be worthwhile for me to come try it next time.
