The legend of the temple’s founding begins with two brothers fishing in the Sumida River, who found a statue of Kannon (the Bodhisattva of compassion). The brothers took the statue to their village, and after it miraculously cured an illness of one of the villagers, they built a temple there to house the statue.⁠
