Unless you are hiding in a cave, otherwise, most Canadians would have heard the latest news that the iconic store, “Hudson’s Bay” (The Bay) is filing for bankruptcy and will be closing down. The latest news is that…the court has allowed Hudson’s Bay to keep 6 stores and the rest of the stores across Canada to be liquating their assets and remaining products.
Quite honestly, Canadians have seen past Canadian companies such as Eaton’s and Simpsons being folded. With the latest trends of shoppers buying anything online or buying cheap stuff via Temu or other popular online stores, it’s not surprising to see Hudson’s Bay having to close down.
MoVernie FUN FACT: Did you know Hudson’s Bay is Canada’s oldest retailer and company? I still remember studying Canadian history that there is a fur trade post.
It’s no surprise for me as I walked by Hudson’s Bay flagship store at downtown Toronto often or at the Markville location where there are often empty shelves with nothing to sell or you hear no music or no air conditioning or heat at Hudson’s Bay store.
For a long time now, I am sure many of us were wondering how does Hudson’s Bay survive with such big space and not much foot traffic? I have hardly purchased anything from Hudson’s Bay for many years. However, I did purchased some Hudson’s Bay merchandise such as beach towel, blanket and other exclusive merch only found at the Bay.
I do enjoy the Olympics x Hudson’s Bay collab during winter and summer Olympics. Those were some nice apparels especially the Canadian mittens that I recalled was only $10 CDN + tax. It’s affordable and stylish and patriotic and keeping my hands real warm.
Even if the products are being liquated with 60%-80% off, I don’t even know if I want to spend any $ on things that I don’t necessary need. It is a sad time especially Canadians have to deal with the tariff war between the Americans. And now our iconic history Hudson’s Bay is closing down, signally the end of the era.
The more pressing question is….what are those people who are going to lose their jobs after many Hudson’s Bay stores will be closing down across Canada? And how are shopping malls going to utilize these spaces left by the Bay?
Do you have any special memories as a kid or special moments when shopping at the Bay that you would like to share?
