The End of an Era!
Unless you are living in a cave, you would probably heard recently that the historic Hudson’s Bay (The Bay) files for bankruptcy and are closing down close to its 80 stores across Canada. Currently, the iconic department store is hoping to retain 6 stores (3 in Ontario and 3 in Quebec) to stay alive but anything can change.
Quite honestly, I am NOT surprised at all for the closure of The Bay as many Canadians see the writing on the wall for a long time. They were hanging by the thread. I was shocked they survive for this long. Every time I walked into the store, there were no music, many shelves were emptied and they even shut down their ventilation, usually no air cond or no heat).
Took a stroll this past weekend, there were many empty shelves, but no major sales, many items remaining were only 25% to $40%, there were some 50%-60% off but after looking at the final price, smart online shoppers know online stores regular price are way cheaper than The Bay’s sales pricing. Worst part? Clothes they are selling right now, they are boring old fashion that no one wants.
The ONLY merch that I only like thru out the years was its Olympics apparel, I really like the $10 Olympics mittens, hoodies and the signature Bay beach towels and blankets. That’s about it.
Talking about wrong timing as well. Just as USA is having a tariff wars with Canada, our oldest Canadian company is coming to a close. So much for buying Made in Canada or supporting Canada. Wrong timing. I do hope The Bay’s staff are being compensated and have arrangements help them seek other career opportunities.
NOTE: Last day to use any outstanding gift cards or gift certificates are on April 6, 2025! (Please check the Hudson’s Bay website or social media (@HudsonsBay) for updates or changes).
The Bay does brought many nostalgic memories when it was part of the BIG 3 department stores (Eaton’s, Simpsons & The Bay).
