On the MOVE at the screening of South Asian Hockey Doc ‘Mareya Shot, Keetha Goal’, hosted by TVO at the Hot Docs Theatre.

Mareya Shot, Keetha Goal: Make the Shot tells the inspiring story of young Canadian hockey players of South Asian descent striving to break barriers and achieve their dreams of being drafted into the NHL. It’s a powerful tale of perseverance, resilience and chasing your goals against all odds.

I had to say that when TVO invited me to this screening, I wasn’t sure the meaning of the title of this documentary. To me, the title was lengthy and doesn’t mention on any of the athletes in the film. But I was glad that in the middle of the film, they mentioned and explained the context of the significance of “Mareya Shot, Keetha Goal: Make the Shot”. Thank you for explaining that to people like myself who doesn’t speak the language. But after learning it, it makes total sense.

The documentary touches on the 1st South Asian hockey pro player in history, which is Robin Bawa, which I never knew, so this was very interesting.

In this documentary, the 2 main hockey players that the directors focused on were Arvin Atwal (currently playing pro hockey in Germany), as well as Arshdeep Bains who signed with the Vancouver Canucks. On February 20, 2024, Bains made his NHL debut with the Canucks in a 3–1 loss to the Colorado Avalanche.

Who are TVO?

Based on the official TVO website, it states,

“As an agency of the Ontario Ministry of Education and a not-for-profit, social impact charity, TVO believes in the importance of equitable education. We seek to represent the voices of communities across the entire province. To do this well, diversity, equity and inclusion are at the core of what we do every day.

TVO promise to spark your curiosity, inspire your discovery and champion your learning.”

After watching the screening of this Canadian documentary, I decided to googled for more INFO on how the athletes being in the documentary were doing. And it turns out that Arshdeep Bains made the NHL debut 11 months ago with his hometown Vancouver Canucks. This is such great news and inspirational for more South Asian kids to dream BIG and hopefully one day making their dreams come true to join Arshdeep and others who are paving waves for the younger generation to succeed.
