We dined here at Very Fair 鴻福海鮮大酒樓 Chinese restaurant for our good friends’ baby 100 celebration. Apparently, Very Fair just recently renovated just a month or so ago, so we got to check out the new interior and layout.
Did You Know? – Both of my good friends had a baby girl and as a Chinese tradition, families tend to host a celebration called “100 Days” to celebrate the baby existence. Chinese people believe that it’s important to celebrate if a baby survives and stay alive after 100 days. As you can imagine, back in the very ancient days with lots of disease, rougher living conditions and lack of medication and medical technology, the survival rate of baby after 100 days isn’t that easy.
From the moment we walked into the lobby, you could see the fish tanks with marble floors, a bar on one side and a waiting area on the other.
Inside, it’s nicely lit with bright ambience, beige wall paint and decor, it’s more modern and inviting, you could see lots of cranes graphics on many parts of the wall.
Our friends 100 Days Celebration had its own section with 5 big tables each accommodating 10 people. We had our own privacy, a mini table putting gifts and space for photo opportunities.
The host had selected a banquet dinner option that was the same for all 5 big tables and here are what we ate at Very Fair 鴻福.
Roast sucking pig platter with jelly fish
Deep fried stuffed crab claws
Dried fried abalone & sea cucumber in XO sauce
Braised shark fin thick soup with sliced abalone and sea cucumber
Braised conpoy (dried scallop) with shitake mushrooms
Baked lobsters with supreme broth (2 lobsters)
Pan fried cod fillet
Fried garlic fried chicken
Seafood fried rice & Braised e-fu noodle with enoki mushrooms
Dessert & fancy pastries (we had the traditional red ben paste dessert + mango pudding and baked walnut mini cookies)
Overall, I thought the service was very fair (no pun intended), we had 2 dedicated staff who served the 5 big dinner tables, cleaning up, serving us with the food and provided us with take out boxes, etc, they were overall very prompt and attentive.
And as for the food, they were coming up quicker and nice and hot meals, the food was tasty and delish, what I appreciate was the food doesn’t taste salty but more inline with what most people prefer nowadays with more less salty flavours. Portion of the food were very fair and although I didn’t see the final price, the pricing of all the banquet dinner options are very fair as I scanned various options outside the lobby of the resto.
The ingredients were tasty and they were very good. In particular, I really enjoyed the XO sauce with stir fry sea cucumber and fresh abalone. The abalone was very meaty and in big pieces. And of course, I enjoyed the shark fin soup. And the pan fried cod fillet was a good surprise for me as the outer layer was crispy and the meat inside was fresh and juicy. For most Chinese banquet dinner options, most of the time, they served steam wholesome fish, which I enjoy but not everyone would want to see the whole fish especially for non-Asians, thus, trying this pan fried cod fillet was refreshing dish item.
MoVernie FUN FACT: This Very Fair restaurant brought extra memories for me coz when my family and I first immigrated to Toronto for our very 1st time, moment we landed, our relatives brought us to dinner at this very space spot. Back then, it was called “Son Kwan” and we sat at the centre elevated stage where the traditional red wall with dragon and phoenix decor. Fast forward so many years later, this space is still a restaurant but called Very Fair and with renovated modern interior.
