Recently in Toronto, there seems to be many Vietnamese restaurants and sandwich (Banh Mi) stores poppin’ up all over the GTA.
And Viet Sandwich – Banh Mi joined the trend. The plaza is new but parking spots are hard to find and it’s difficult to park as the length of the spot could be tight. The parking spot is so close to the the road that cars passed by that I don’t even feel comfy leaving my car there coz bad drivers can easily scrap your car.
Anyway, about Viet Sandwich, prices are very similar to other new Viet sandwich stores. Assorted cold cut is $5.99 CDN + tax here. Grilled Pork, Grilled Beef, Grilled Pork Sausage and Grilled chicken are $6.99 CDN + tax.
The day when I went, the staff said Grilled Beef and Grilled Pork Sausage sandwiches were not available during my visit. So, I settled for 2 orders of assorted cold cut, grilled pork, grilled chicken, total of 6 sandwiches.
There was only 1 lady lining in front of me, so it wasn’t busy. However, yet the staff (looks like the owner) was taking long time to take my order. I really don’t understand why it took so long to take any order when it’s a short simple sandwich options.
Also, when you go to many other Vietnamese sandwich stores, you can see what the staff is doing and preparing your sandwiches. Unfortunately, here at Viet Sandwich, you can’t see what they are doing.
Moreover, they don’t label their sandwiches here. So, when I got home, we had to guess which sandwich is what, which isn’t quite easy as they seem all look very similar.
MoVernie SUGGESTION: They could perhaps put label on their sandwiches, have sticker labels or a different colour wrapping paper? Without labels, when we open our sandwiches at home, no one can identity what sandwich is what.
When I asked the staff that I prefer my sandwiches to be spicy, she said all of them will be spicy anyway, which was odd, coz many vendors would ask if you want mild, semi-spicy or super spicy. Coz assuming everyone can eat and handle spicy food by default seems odd to me.
This place has no tables or chairs or counter to sit, so they expect you to bring it home to eat, which is also a pity coz it’s a massive space that I feel isn’t fully utilized.
Quite honestly, I really don’t understand why they need such a big empty space to run this sandwich shop coz even when they use the space at the back to bake the bread, there is still lots of unused space in the front. To have such big empty space, and yet you still can’t see how they prepare their sandwiches is an odd interior layout.
Really don’t know how they can survive paying all this rent selling $6.99 sandwiches as the space is underutilized.
As for taste wise, it’s ok, meat paste is ok, meat is decent but the bread is smaller and shorter than other competitors. Not much ingredients in there.
My overall feedback is…unless you are around the area and the shop happens to be quiet, feel free to stop by and grab some sandwiches. Otherwise, I wouldn’t bother to come here, coz service takes long, you can’t see the staff preparing your sandwiches, the sandwich size shorter and smaller in size and I really don’t want to fight hard to find a parking spot.
