正豆茶餐廳 Cha Chaan Teng @ Markham has recently been opened and it creates lots of buzz lately coz so many peeps showed up on the 1st day and there weren’t enough food to serve the patrons. Then, more people show up on the next few days wanting to give this place a try.

I don’t care how good or popular a place is…if I have to lineup for a long time, I rather go somewhere else. Luckily, I happened to be around the area in the morning one day and decided to test my luck. And it was not packed when I arrived at 10:40 AM, but after 10 mins, the place is packed again.

This place does its job by offering HK Style Cha Chan Teng food options.

The place is small but it fits the tight space you would find in Hong Kong for these types of eatery. Once the door is opened, some of the areas gets chilly coz strong cold wind comes in, so if it’s not packed, try to sit in the section away from the door.

There is one cool solo spot near the cashier, it’s quite unique.

I found the prices overall fair and reasonable. It’s not cheap but not expensive.

I tried the breakfast combo (available from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM) at $10.49 CDN + tax that comes with a choice of mini hash tots or butter toast or pancakes (not many other places offer pancakes or mini tots, so those are good options). It also offers scrambled eggs or sunny side up eggs, I chose scrambled, it’s creamy, juicy and delicious. The combo also came with a piece of ham and a sausage. At $10.49, it’s actually a very good value proposition for such a good amount of food.

The biggest surprise was the soup macaroni. The broth was served in cream of chicken. My mom used to tell me that back in the good ol’ days in Hong Kong, many eatery will serve soup macaroni in cream of chicken but as places try to cut cost, they no longer uses cream of chicken. I thought my mom was always joking or making it up, until I saw this place serves cream of chicken broth, now I understood why mom said cream of chicken broth was so much better. This is a great surprise.

ONLY complain I have is that…..they charge 75 cent extra if you ask for hot yin-yang or any types of hot beverage. Many patrons are used to order any hot beverage anywhere for no charge at many places. So when people ordered hot yin-yang here, many wouldn’t know it’s 75 cent extra. Luckily, I read the entire menu and fine-print clearly everywhere I dine and I asked the server, he said yes, it’s 75 cent extra charge for any hot beverage that is not hot milk tea or hot coffee.

I could understand that if it’s some fancy beverage or cold beverage, you want to charge more, but I am sure hot yin-yang is not that much of work compared to a hot milk tea or hot coffee. Anyways, I recommend all the staff are being trained to inform all patrons just so they know it’s 75 cent extra charge to avoid any misunderstanding or angry faces after they receive their bills.

I settled with a hot black coffee. Surprisingly, the black coffee was quite good, flavourful, tasty with good coffee aroma. I was impressed.

Otherwise, I like their interesting names on their food and beverages. For example, “Hand Sup coffee” or “Sum Shui Po Street Food”.

I would luv to come back to try out more of their unique food items. Food seems tasty at the moment but I will only visit during quieter times to avoid waiting long.

On a side note, the young staff working here gives good energy and vibes. They speak good English and Chinese to help explain their food and beverage options.
