Goubuli 狗不理 – Bao – Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada

Our 1st visit to the Goubuli 狗不理 Richmond Hill location was this past December when our friends booked a private VIP dinner inviting all the friends and families, celebrating Christmas and the holiday season. This was a precious dinner since we have not seen many of these friends for almost 2 to 3 years due to the pandemic.

Our friends Joyze and Raymond were very generous in hosting 5 full tables of friends with one giant table dedicated to the kids. The kids’ table were being fed with gourmet food items such as Peking Duck, dumplings, veggies and many traditional Chinese cuisines. They don’t serve them chicken nuggets, fries or hamburgers here, LOL

As I spoke with the friendly staff, this Richmond Hill location was opened 7 years ago. Apparently, Goubuli 狗不理 is super famous in China and Richmond Hill was the 1st location being opened outside of China. And to add to the success of this expansion, about 3 years ago, a 2nd Toronto location of Goubuli 狗不理 was opened in Chinatown, in the iconic Spadina area, right under the famous Dragon City shopping mall across the Gold Stone Chinese restaurant.

Goubuli 狗不理 doesn’t just serve its famous juicy pork dumplings, hot & sour soup, but it also serves big dish of stir fry seafood and fried lobster mountains, etc. We were impressed with the unique dishes that offer here at Goubuli 狗不理. There were many interesting ingredients and dishes that we have never tried before, so it was refreshing and exciting to get to try some of these delicious dishes.

In particular, we enjoyed the Jellyfish in Dark Vinegar that serves as cold appetizer.

The stir fry conch dish with celery, bok choy, black fungus, zucchini were super tasty. I luv the veggies components as well as the texture.

My personal farvourite was the big bowl of pork intestine, chicken, bean curd that gives a nice peppery flavour.

The Alaskan Crab meats and the lobster meat were fresh and delicious as well.

And lastly, we enjoyed the fried rice that looks like 2 fishes swimming. The fish roe added the crunchiness of the rice texture, this is a MUST ORDER dish.

After this amazing feast, we actually visited the downtown Toronto Chinatown Goubuli 狗不理 location. That location has more updated modern interior design, comfy chairs and nice cutlery and bowls and plates.

We luv this place so much now that we brought our parents to try the Richmond Hill location. We found both locations are equally as delicious, great customer service and very reasonable price and portion.

We highly recommend Goubuli 狗不理 to anyone to try and explore your tastebuds!

History of Goubuli 狗不理

So, I read and understand Chinese writing, so when I noticed the restaurant’s name is called ”    ” in Chinese, I found it interesting and a bit odd. Like, why is it called “Dog Don’t Care”? Who is the dog? So, I wanted to find out more and as I went to its website, it says,

THE CULINARY LEGACY OF GOUBULI BEGAN IN 1858 BY THE ESTABLISHMENT OF ITS FIRST OUTLET IN TIANJIN, CHINA. THE LEGENDARY GOUBULI BAOZI WAS INVENTED BY GOUZI USING HALF LEAVEN DOUGH, RICHLY FLAVOURED MEAT AND A DELICIOUS SOUPY FILLING. EACH BAOZI IS ELEGANTLY HANDMADE WITH 18-FOLD CHRYSANTHEMUM CROWN AND STEAMED TO PERFECTION. THE FAMOUS BAOZI ATTRACTED PATRONS FROM ALL OVER CHINA AND BUSINESS WAS SOON DOING SO WELL THAT GOUZI BECAME TOO BUSY TO ENGAGE IN SMALL TALK AND PEOPLE STARTED CALLING HIM GOUBULI (WHICH MEANS DOG IGNORES). HENCE THE NAME GOUBULI WAS BORN.

Definitely quite interesting on how the name of the restaurant originated. I learn one thing about myself is that….if I am curious about something or not sure what it is, I will research and find out more. We are at a day & age where INFO are readily available on the internet that there is no excuse not to research any INFO.
