My Judging Experience for Miss Asia Toronto Pageant

0

For the second straight years in a row, the organizer for Miss Asia Toronto Pageant has invited me to be back on the judging panel for Miss Asia Toronto 2013. Last year was a great experience for me. It was an awesome feeling when the contestant that you had chosen flew back to Hong Kong and competed for the Grand Finals which consist of grand prizes worth 3 Million HK Dollars (that’s about $500,000 CDN).

For this year, there will be three rounds of pageant contests. The first one was the preliminary round that was held yesterday in the west end of Toronto at Albion Centre Mall, which is populated by many ethnicities. I am quite happy for the choice of this venue location as it is important for Miss Asia to hold an event that is outside of the typical Asian venues, so that more people from the non-asian communities could learn and understand our culture more. Besides, the 20 contestants that were on hand yesterday came from different backgrounds. These girls have Asian Background from Hong Kong, China, Vietnam, Jamaican-Philippines, India and Canada.

There were 5 judges (including myself) sitting at the front of the centre stage. The ladies were judged based on 5 categories 1) Appearance; 2) Dance; 3) Catwalk; 4) Speech & 5) Intelligence. First off, all the ladies wearing a nice, pure, classy dress and greet the audience. Then, one-by-one they do a catwalk with nice energetic music. Then, each of them have to do an individual 10s dance moves. Their beauty and amazing dances hyped up the crowd.

During the intermission, the special performer, Zeyon, a talented R&B, Hip-hop artist sang his two latest tracks. He is releasing his album sometime in October.

After the amazing performance of some R&B music, the ladies  changed into their cultural outfits. It was actually my favourite part as  they represent their own ethnicity. It was also a treat for me to see all the different outfits. The colours and the various outfits was able to showcase their beauties in a different light. In addition, they went through the Q & A segment where the two amazing Emcees, Mark Y & Sanjay asked the ladies a question. This is the segment that the judges evaluate their speech and intelligence.

Unfortunately, this is a pageant contest after all, some of them had to go home. 16 out of 20 contestants moved on to the semifinals which will be held 2 weeks later on August 24, Saturday at New Kennedy Square.

I will be on the judging panel for the semi-finals. It always great to see the progress and the growth by the ladies after 2 weeks of more training and hard work preparations.
