Moon Festival/Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋節) is one of the important special day that Chinese people celebrates. Every year is a different date as it’s based on the old Chinese calendar that is different from the Western World calendar. For 2022, it’s on a Saturday, September 10, 2022.

On Moon Festival, families will all converge and gather on a family dinner.

Moon Festival also celebrates the full moon, it’s that time of the year where the moon is the brightest and fullest and back in the ancient history, people will gather around and enjoy the evening and looking at the bright full moon.

Traditionally, people dress up during Moon Festival. We also have specialty food items that are only being made or eaten during Moon Festival, most notably, the Moon Cake. It’s usually in square looking shape with a golden brown outer layer and inside are sticky paste with duck eggs.

– flour
– lotus seed paste
– sugar
– Golden syrup

Nowadays, our family don’t really buy moon cake coz it’s high cholesterol, it’s expensive (popular brand names that are being shipped from Hong Kong can be as expensive as $80 CDN for 4 pieces), that’s steep and we don’t really like moon cakes, LOL. But we still gather by going out and eat a feast to celebrate and appreciate our times together as a family.

I still remember when I was a kid back in Hong Kong that my parents will buy me moon lantern to play during Moon Festival. Back in the ancient times, people used paper lanterns and put candles in them to lit them up. However, as it’s a fire hazards and not good for kids, our modern world uses electric lantern. I remembered I had a “Ding Dong” electric lantern, but I only got one if I do well in school, which I did and my parents got me one. It was memorable and fun!
