Ohiru Cafe – Japanese Brunch – College Street, Toronto, Canada

As many of you have already read my previous MoVernie BLOG about my experience at the soft opening of the Sampo Bar. What’s so interesting about this location is that….at night, it’s called “Sampo Bar”, but during the day, it’s called “Ohiru Cafe”. Same location, 2 different businesses with 2 different concepts.

I think this is a very genius idea, maximizing the space and utilizing the business hours serving different food items and beverage items. I mean, I hate to see other businesses where they only open during the night serving dinner and then the entire day, it’s just mainly for food preparations and not generating revenue.

Of course, both Ohiru Cafe and Sampo Bar have to bring in 2 different set of chefs, culinary teams, different food and drink items, yet, I would say this 2-in-1 concept works admirably by both businesses.

In this MoVernie BLOG, let me show you my dining experience at Ohiru Cafe. Overall though, I enjoy both Ohiru and Sampo, both brings different delicious food menus and beverage menus and both businesses have its own niche and signature dishes that people want to indulge.

As we glanced through the food menu, there are so many food items that we wanted to try. MoKenny chose the Karaage & Waffles which consists of Japanese fried chicken, garlic aioli, homemade waffles, house salad, and miso syrup. MoKenny said it’s super delicious. The Karaage were huge in size (3 of them), crispy outside and super juicy inside. The portion was substantial. The homemade waffles along with the miso syrup was unique and tasty.

We also ordered the latte. There was a nice pattern design on the top. It’s perfect combo pairing with our respective dishes. Next time, I would like to try the black sesame latte.

As for me, I ordered the Tonkatsu Sando consists of crispy pork cutlet, B&S Sauce, karashi,
and cabbage slaw. I like the portion and to have both fries and salad, it’s a nice combo pairing. The bread was toasty and fluffy which I like. In particular, the pork cutlet is the star of the show, luv its thickness, the meat sticking out a bit out of the toasty bread and the 1st bite was the fatty part of the pork which is heaven for me!!!!!!

Every bite of the pork culet was amazing! Crispy outside and super juicy inside. I also appreciate that the B&S sauce wasn’t too much (just perfect) and it’s not overpowering the pork cutlet. As for the fries, it’s crispy and yummy. And the salad dressing, super unique and giving an unique taste to the greens.

There are so many more food items that we wanted to try, we will definitely be back to try the Tomago Sando featuring egg salad and runny soft boiled egg in between. I also wanted to try the Chashu Croissant and Salmon Eggs Benny.

It looks like me and my MoVernie Crew would probably hang out here more often and during both day & night, LOL. Brunch at Ohiru and then come back later in the night to grab a nice bowl of Ramen across the street at Ramen Isshin and then come back over to enjoy the late night snack and drinks at Sampo. That’s a trifecta of win-win-win situation!
