Another medal in the bank for Team Canada! This time, it’s the Canadian’s Women Beach Volleyball featuring Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson won a silver medal. Congratulations to both!
In the finals, they were up against the powerhouse Brazil team. The Toronto duo, ranked No. 7 in the world, fell to No. 1-ranked Brazilian team in 3 sets.
This Canadian Women’s Beach Volleyball team was extra special for me was coz last week, during the round robin, I was watching with my dad and Canada lost a regular game to the lower rank Polish team. Canada has to play an extra game just trying to squeeze into the next qualifying round to survive.
And for whatever reason, the team’s strategy worked as they propelled and pushed hard to keep winning and advanced to the next few rounds to the finals against the Brazilian team.
And on a personal experience, I met Melissa Humana-Paredes back in 2021 when Team Canada hosted a “Welcome Home” rally celebration for all the Canadian athletes. Those who live in Toronto were attending the event to greet the fans.
As you may recalled, during 2021, we were just coming out of the pandemic and people were still social distancing, only a handful of lucky fans were allowed to enter the outdoor parking lot outside Sherway Gardens to witness the homecoming of our Canadian athletes.
Everyone was still wearing masks. I was wearing mask and I got to chat with Decathlon Pierce LePage, Damien Werner and Beach Volleyball Melissa Humana-Paredes.
I got a chance to talk to Melissa Humana-Paredes. She didn’t win any medals back then but you could tell she has the heart and passion to continue to master her skillz and the drive to win in the near future Olympics. And now, her dreams is fulfilled as they became the first Canadian Women Volleyball to advanced to the finals and also winning a medal.
Congrats to Melissa Humana-Paredesd Brandie Wilkerson! Very proud of you both!
