Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) is an association consists of professional journalists, writers, videographers, photographers and corporate entities whose focus is the automobile and automotive industry.

Each year during the Media Day at the Canadian International AutoShow in Toronto, the winners for AJAC Car of the Year and AJAC Utility Vehicle of the Year are announced.

And this year’s winners goes to……

2023 Canadian Car of the Year – BMW i4

I test drove the BMW i4 last year and here is my MoVernie BLOG about my test drive experience with the BMW i4. I enjoyed it and I wrote how this BMW i4 brings value, style and performance, it’s a total package if someone is looking for an electric vehicle option.

2023 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year – IONIQ 5

Although I didn’t test drive the Hyundai IONIQ 5, but it’s an unique, futuristic looking electric cross-over. This vehicle was in high demand and is still in high demand that no dealerships have inventory. People have to wait for it. With this IONIQ 5 won this AJAC Utility Vehicle of the Year, I am afraid the waiting time would be even more longer with more people wanting to buy one.

Congrats to both brands and both vehicles for winning their respective categories. And the amazing part? This is the first time that both awards are won by electric vehicles. This is the new trend and will continue to dominate as our world is moving forward to producing even more electric vehicle options.

The three finalists for 2023 Canadian Car of the Year are:

BMW i4 (Best Premium EV in Canada for 2023)
Hyundai Elantra N (Best Sports Performance Car in Canada for 2023)
Mazda3 (Best Small Car in Canada for 2023)

Speaking of the Utility Vehicle of the Year, time has evolved and AJAC has keeping up with time. In the past, the award was named “Truck of the Year”, then after a number of years, it’s called “SUV of the Year”, and now “Utility Vehicle of the Year” to keeping up with vehicles that no longer has a definite shapes or labels. Kind of similar to the Toronto Raptors who wants to play “Position-less type of basketball” with no definite role, all 5 guys just play ball. Not necessary a Centre or a Power Forward or Small Forward or Shooting Guard or Point Guard.
